Saturday morning our Wire Chasers team ran the Running Out of Summer 5K at O’Gara Park in Spencer, a flat and fast out-and-back on the Spencer Rail Trail a few minutes from our shop floor.
We sponsor the races we run
Putting our name on an event is the easy part. Being at the starting line at 10 a.m. on the last Saturday in August is the part that counts. That is how we handle community events here. If Mercury Wire is on the banner, our people are on the course.
Some of the team ran it for time. Some ran it for fun. Everyone finished, and everyone stayed for the food, the music, and the awards afterward.

Where the miles went
The race supported two organizations doing work that stays in this area.
The Rapscallion HOPS Foundation is an independent 501(c)(3) that provides financial assistance to community members in need in Spencer, Sturbridge, and the surrounding towns. The Spencer Parks and Recreation Commission is an all-volunteer board that serves the recreational needs of Spencer residents, including the trail and park system this race ran through.
Neither group is abstract to us. We build cable in Spencer, our employees live in these towns, and their kids use these fields and trails.
Thank you to Spencer
Thank you to the organizers, the volunteers, and everyone who registered, ran, walked, or cheered from the side of the trail. A community race only works when a lot of people give up a Saturday morning to make it happen.
We are already looking at next August.
